POST-CHEMOTHERAPY HAIR LOSS AND WHAT YOU DO ABOUT IT

You might not think about how important your hair is until you face losing it. If you have been diagnosed with cancer and are about to undergo chemotherapy, the chance of hair loss is very real. Hair loss is one of the most dreaded side effects of chemotherapy and it adds to the devastation of the diagnosis. For many, hair loss announces to the world that you have cancer. If you aren't comfortable sharing this information with others, you may fear hair loss more than other chemotherapy side effects.

Recently a scientific article was published, as to how women stricken with cancer coped with the inevitable occurrence of hair loss. The study described how women anticipate reactions to chemotherapy and how they prepare for a modified body appearance. The conclusion of the study was that “the study patients' main reasons for lack of anticipatory coping behavior were shame, insecure thoughts about the future, and unwillingness to live with a wig”.

Despite the need to address the importance of hair loss for those with cancer, patients often receive little more counseling than the advice to purchase a wig or other head covering for the duration of their treatment, according to another study. For some, covering their hair loss is an option that works as a temporary solution. Most people want to get their hair back to its natural state as quickly as possible.

Recently, use of cooling machines during therapy has shown some promise in preventing some hair loss, this does not address the shedding that occurs AFTER chemotherapy. Although there is not much you can do to avoid this cancer treatment side effect, there are ways to help restore your hair after treatment ends.
